It’s Time for Spring Cleaning!
One of the first lessons in personal care that we learned as children was to brush and floss our teeth at least twice a day. Not only does it help keep our smiles looking bright and our breath fresh, by following a regular oral care regimen at home, you are helping to ensure that your teeth and gums will stay healthy. But did you know that no matter how diligent you are at taking care of your teeth at home, harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that can only be removed by your dentist or hygienist? Over time, untreated bacteria can cause cavities and gum disease, and possibly be linked to heart disease and other illnesses, significantly affecting your overall health. As many as 90% of adults have some form of gum disease. That’s why part of your dental health routine should also include a visit to your dentist at least once every six months.
Professional cleanings reinforce your efforts in your own home care oral health regimen of brushing, flossing and/or using a waterflosser as well as providing:
- Removal of plaque, tartar and stains
- Evaluation of gum tissue
- Polishing
- Fluoride application
- An oral cancer screening
- Checking biting/chewing patterns
- X-rays
- Cleaning/adjustment of dentures and appliances
- Reviewing and updating medical history
- Nutritional counseling
- Referral to specialist dentists as needed
- Recommendations for future treatment
By working together, your dentist and hygienist act as co-therapists to help you manage your oral health. It is never too late to get back on track with regular dental check-ups and cleanings.
Be sure to add a dental visit to this year’s Spring Cleaning list!
