Why Fluoride?

For over 50 years, the oral healthcare benefits of fluoride have been accepted without question.  The American Dental Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention endorse the use of fluoride in preventing tooth decay. Naturally occurring in ground water and oceans, fluoride is often added to community water systems, as well as in most toothpastes and oral rinses. However, toothpaste and tap water are often inadequate to protect teeth from cavities.

Fluoride:  A Shield for Your Teeth

Dental caries (tooth decay) is caused by acid-producing bacteria that collect around the teeth and gums, resulting in a sticky film called “plaque”. While regular brushing and flossing helps to remove plaque, some individuals may be at higher risk to develop dental caries and gum disease. Factors that contribute to cavities include: Poor oral hygiene, lack of professional dental care and cleanings, poor diet and/or eating disorders, drug or alcohol abuse, exposed root surfaces of teeth, decreased salivary flow (dry mouth). Tooth sensitivity to cold and/or hot can affect up to 25% of all adults, usually as the result of gum recession and root exposure.  This exposure can also lead to cavities.

Controlling Tooth Sensitivity

Professional fluoride treatments can be the answer to protect teeth from cavities and sensitivity.  Research shows that properly applied fluoride blocks cavities and sensitivity by forming a more acid resistant surface layer.  It takes only a few minutes for your dentist or hygienist to apply fluoride on your teeth. Depending on your oral health, fluoride treatments may be recommended every three, six or twelve  months.
